I ♥ Dave!

No. I'm not on the outs with my hubby. "Dave" is my new laptop table, silly! You might be thinking, "She names her furniture? That's weird even for katdish." The thing is, IKEA (pronounced, "eye-eek-kee" by my Japanese mother, but I digress) named my laptop table. You would think that a laptop table from IKEA would have a name like FREDRIK, or HANNES, or GUSTAV, or LUDVIG, with annoying special characters over the vowels. Incidentally, those are all actual names of computer work stations available from IKEA. (And you thought I didn't research my blog posts. Humph!) But no, in a sea of snotty Euro trash workstations, there sat Dave. Quiet, unassuming little Dave. For $29.99, I knew my purchase of him would be the start of a beautiful friendship:

While I'm thinking about it, I should tell you that shopping at IKEA on a Saturday is a pretty dumb thing to do, unless you have a burning desire to shop shoulder to shoulder with lots of other people and then wait in a long line to check out behind a couple of guys who are stocking up to go into the restuarant business and in front of a woman who decides she really doesn't want the pillows that her infant son has drenched with drool. But once again, I digress...

Once I was finally home, Dave was assembled within minutes. He was everything I had hoped for and more:

This is Dave in his new home: my quiet little retreat I like to call "my studio". I've only written one post on him, but I look forward to many more. Some of you might be saying, "But what about Planky? He has been there for you from the start! Are you going to abandon your loyal friend after so many months of loyal service?" No, peeps. Alas, I am typing on Planky as we speak:

I still love Planky. I like to type on him when my hubby is home because while I'm not sitting next to him, at least I can see him while he's in his office. We're all one, big happy family!

BTW - That is my cat Rudy in the picture. And no, his eyes don't actually shine like tiny orbs of evilness. Here's how he usually looks:

You can't even imagine how disappointed I am. I begin reading this post thinking "Wow! We really are kindred spirits! She names her furniture, too!" only to find out that it is IKEA I have something in common with. Oh well....Hace es la vida. That's Spanish for Se la vie.

Well...I actually did name Planky.

Ko-ni-chi-wa

That is good to know.
In German there is a classic story "Ein Tisch ist Ein Tisch", which means a table is a table. It is about a man who thinks it would be funny to rename everything in the house something else (except, of course, his table remains table), and sort of develops a language no one else knows. He then forgets the original words, and no one knows what he is ever talking about. I like that story. My hair is named Rita, just so you know...

What, or who, is Ko-ni-chi-wa? I am not kidding. I really don't know.

katdish said...

Ko-ni-chi-wa is a Japanese greeting meaning "Have a wonderful morning", or something like that...

Say hello to Rita for me.

I love your cat! And why did you get Dave if you're just going to keep using Planky?

I was just thinking of buying a very simple computer desk so I could lounge in my recliner while I typed. Guess I will check out IKEA.

wv wariffey - slang for when you can't decide if war is imminent. Also sometimes spelled with a hyphen: war-iffey

ps. I added more to my blog splainin' why I'm stressed.

I'm gonna start naming my furniture. They don't get enough love and I should show it...

I guess I'll pull out my old copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting and try some names out from there. It's a good jumping off point I think.

BTW, I've been the a Houston Ikea. No thanks, I won't be doing that again. I have better ways to spend the 6 hours in post-Ike traffic and the ridiculous lines in the store. But you're my hero for putting up with it to get a great table. (Tip: try the internet. They sell things on there. You can order it and it will be delivered by the post office, or maybe UPS. You should give it a looksie and see if you can handle it).

Can I have the cat?

Angela - Planky is my "sitting on my big butt whilst reclining in the family room" friend, while Dave is my "sitting on my big butt whilst in my studio" friend. I thought I made that clear. I like to spread the love.

Jude - I have another Planky, if you're interested.

Tony - Dave and I will be sure to check out your blog today.

Kris - what is a eee pc? I'm clueless.

Marni - I actually attempted to go to IKEA post Ike. I remember seeing the parking lot and saying, "Oh, HELL no!" I'll have to check out that whole internet shopping idea. I bet it's the next big thing...

Annie - NO!

I named my first car, but that is the only inanimate object I've named ... ok that isn't entirely true I also named my GPS but she talks to me so that is a little different.

BTW, have you been to Japan? I lived there when I was a little geek. I think exposure to the techomecca in my formative years explains my ubbergeekiness. My first memory is the airport leaving Japan. I never knew that it was the airport till I was talking to my mom about my first memory and the motorized police car that i wanted which they bought for me. I don't remember anything else about Japan till I got stranded there for the night without a passport. Long but funny story that could only happen to me or my sister.

The craziest stuff happens to us. It is like weird just goes around looking for us because we are totally chill when it happens.

I would love to go to Japan. My mom and my sisters went last year. They are planning another trip and want very much for us to come along. There's just one problem: Do you have any idea how much it costs for a family of 4 to vacation in Japan? We may swing it some day, but for now I'd like very much not to raid my kids' college fund in order to see the place where my mom was born. Even though I know it would be very meaningful for all of us.

Rudy, Dave, and Planky all sound to me like characters from a cartoon strip spin-off of "Get Fuzzy." Other names from IKEA products could depict characters who make guest appearances.

"Rudy, did you trick Planky into being a T.V. tray for you again?" "Yes, Dave."
"Why do you take advantage of him like that?"
"I'm sorry Dave. I was trying to impress my new friend, Ekor; have you guys met?"

Nick the Geek said...

You should see if you qualify for government money for your family heritage study.

Both of my trips to Japan were government sponsored.

katdish said...

Didn't I see Ekor on "Sprockets"?

I named my first guitar Gunther and my first car Barnaby Blue, but I haven't named any inanimate things lately.

I always thought that they named the shoes strange names at Wal-mart...ever notice that? The sassy strappy heels were named things like "Bambi" and the sensible shoes were names like "Gertrude."

Your cat is cute :) I named my pc Fred lol

Wow, so here is where our alternate universes diverge... I've never named any of my furniture. Or my hair (...Helen...)

But Charlie and I never call our dogs by the same name twice. We've called them Dogalicious, Stinkbert, Caldonia J Dogbottom, Whiffydoo, and Charlie's favorite name for Bob: Other Dog.

We also make up songs about them.

I want to know how that AWESOME cat has room to sit on Dave?

I don't have names for body parts or hair. But my podiatrist told me that one leg is 1/4 inch shorter than the other, he started calling me Eileen.

katdish said...

Candy,

Or as my mom would say, "Irene".

Marni said...

Steph, we totally make up songs for our dogs too! I feel less weird now. Thank you for the "gift of going second" ;)

I mentioned earlier, we name our cars (ie. Dora--my Explorer. Ha! I crack myself up) but I forgot to mention my quirky tendencies to name my landscaping. My Bradford Pear tree is named Gert. No idea why, she just looks like a Gert. And everytime we have a bad Texas storm, I'm at the window all "Hang on Gert, bend with the wind. Don't break! You're my ONLY tree!". I also named my Japanses Box shrubs, Huey, Duey and Luey. As in "Honey, Duey is looking a little shaggy, can you get Razor (that's what we call our scary hedge trimmer) out and give him a little touch up?"

I heart cats.
Even evil ones.
And laptops.
But they are called laptops for a reason.
Seems like you're holding your laptop back from fulfilling his destiny.

Candy said...

OK Kat, it took me all day to get your comment. I kept thinking "Irene?? Irene???" Oh snap, I'm so slow sometimes.

I also have a jade plant named Harold.

With funny characters over the vowels!!! That made me happy. It's kinda like that with other things, too, like jeans. Boise doesn't have an I Eek Kee, and I've never been. The stuff looks cool enough though. Hope you're doing well!
