Conviction

I am somewhat hesitant to read too much into secular songs when it comes to their meaning. I am, after all, a Christian, and I hopefully I see things from that perspective. But I also believe that God can use anything for His Glory, despite the original intent. I heard this song years ago. Only recently did I hear it in a way that was truly convicting to me.

I May Know the Word

I may know the word
but not say it
I may know the truth
but not face it
I may hear a sound
a whisper sacred and profound
but turn my head
indifferent

I may know the word
but not say it
I may love the fruit
but not taste it
I may know the way
to comfort and to soothe
a worried face
but fold my hands
indifferent

If I'm on my knees
I'm begging now
if I'm on my knees
groping in the dark
I'd be paying for deliverance
from the night into day

but it's all grey here
it's all grey to me

I may know the word
but not say it
this may be the time
but I might waste it
this may be the hour
something move me
someone prove me wrong
before the night comes
with indifference

if I'm on my knees
I'm begging now
if I'm on my knees
groping in the dark
I'd be praying for deliverance
from the night into the day

but it's all grey here
but it's all grey to me

I recognize the walls inside me
I recognize them all
I've paced between them
chasing demons down
until they fall
in fitful sleep
enough to keep their strength
enough to crawl
into my head
with tangled threads
they riddle me to solve

again and again and again

Okay, I have this CD and used to listen to it constantly in college, but I never looked at the words closely or had this perspective on it before. It was just kind of background music I liked the sound of back then. Crazy how my perspective on things has changed so much in a few years, because I now see convicting and truthful words jumping out at me!

Ooo, love that. I'm gonna have to soak on it today.

I found you from SCL. Love your comments there. :)

In honor of that: Word verification:

~How did you know?~

Ditto to Beth:
I have this CD and I've listened to it over and over again (especially in college) but never looked at that song in that way.
Very cool. Thanks katdish!

Beth and Stacey - I think you gals are around the same age and probably have a lot in common. I remember when I first starting seeing your comments on SCL, I would always get you 2 confused.

Steph - thanks so much for stopping by! I think Jon's blog inspired many of us to start blogs of our own. Whether anyone should thank or blame him I suppose is a matter of opinion. Your blog is fabulous, BTW. I have blogger envy!

Pam - I guess I "know" because, on some level, we all know our own personal struggles with the demons inside our heads. It is reassuring, however to know that the battle has already been won, that the enemy is already defeated.

Oh, and another thing...

I also wore this CD out. When I first bought it, I was really loving "Carnival" and "Jealousy", I was young and single at the time. When my daughter was born, I used to sing "Wonder" to her every day. When my friend Dee lost her battle with cancer, I would listen to "Beloved Wife" and just cry my eyes out and grieve for her husband. It's a pretty timeless piece of work in my opinion.

Okay, I went and listened to this whole CD yesterday. Love. It. Forever. And your right...Stacey and I DO have much in common! In fact, she was the first person to ever comment on a comment I made on SCL and we keep in touch! :)

Mmm. Good post.
Thanks for your comment. The fact that you are not getting updates isn't just with you. I don't know what's up with it, but it's a problem on my end. So thanks for drawing my attention to it! I'm not too good at figuring these things out, but hopefully we'll get things running properly soon.

I read the words yesterday, but decided to listen to the song today during prayer time. Listening to the artist sing really makes a difference. It inspired me to pray that He not find me lukewarm, and spit me out. It made me think about what He means by lukewarm, and admit that at times I am. Thanks Kathy.
