Did you believe that I loved you?

I know I've posted this before, but it bears repeating. I know I need to hear it:

Brennan Manning said:

The Lord Jesus is going to ask each of us one question and only one question: Do you believe that I loved you? That I desired you? That I waited for you day after day? That I longed to hear the sound of your voice?

The real believers there will answer, "Yes, Jesus. I believed in your love and I tried to shape my life as a response to it. But many of us who are so faithful in our ministry, in our practice, in our church going are going to have to reply, "Well frankly, no sir. I mean, I never really believed it. I mean, I heard alot of wonderful sermons and teachings about it. In fact I gave quite a few myself. But I always knew that that was just a way of speaking; a kindly lie, some Christian's pious pat on the back to cheer me on. And there's the difference between the real believers and the nominal Christians that are found in our churches across the land. No one can measure like a believer the depth and the intensity of God's love. But at the same time, no one can measure like a believer the effectiveness of our gloom, pessimism, low self-esteem, self-hatred and despair that block God's way to us. Do you see why it is so important to lay hold of this basic truth of our faith? Because you're only going to be as big as your own concept of God.

Do you remember the famous line of the French philosopher, Blaise Pascal? "God made man in his own image, and man returned the compliment"? We often make God in our own image, and He winds up to be as fussy, rude, narrow minded, legalistic, judgemental, unforgiving, unloving as we are.

In the past couple of three years I have preached the gospel to the financial community in Wallstreet, New York City, the airmen and women of the air force academy in Colorado Springs, a thousand positions in Nairobi. I've been in churches in Bangor, Maine, Miami, Chicago, St. Louis, Seattle, San Diego. And honest, the god of so many Christians I meet is a god who is too small for me. Because he is not the God of the Word, he is not the God revealed by it in Jesus Christ who this moment comes right to your seat and says, "I have a word for you. I know your whole life story. I know every skeleton in your closet. I know every moment of sin, shame, dishonesty and degraded love that has darkened your past. Right now I know your shallow faith, your feeble prayer life, your inconsistent discipleship. And my word is this: I dare you to trust that I love you just as you are, and not as you should be. Because you're never going to be as you should be."

Do you believe that He loves you?

NOTE: You many have noticed that I when I post a song video here, I will also provide the lyrics to the video. The reason I do this is because not everyone who reads my blog is able to view videos on their computers. It's ususally an easy matter of cutting and pasting the lyrics from another source - no big deal. As far as I could find, there is no transcript of this particular speech by Manning. I typed what he said as I heard it, so if I misheard anything, I apologize. I think I got it right, though, and I'm so glad I typed it out, because sometimes I'm a little thick, and the exercise helped me soak in every single word.

What an incredible reminder. And I KNOW He loves me. Powerful.

Can someone please provide some scripture to back what he's said up, particularly this "

Katdish,

Thanks for posting this! I swear just yesterday I was walking Jack the wonderdog and praying as I usually do (unless he is being particularly difficult, fortunately for me he was amiable so I was able to pray)..... anyway, I had been a bit melancholy over the situation with my son (we are in a waiting period that is difficult) and as I was pouring my heart out to Jesus I had such a feeling of love from Him, in my heart over and over I just heard Him say I love you, that is what matters most right now. Rest in Me. He is my all in all and I know he loves me so!

It was a wonderful walk

In Him,
Tina

Joanna from Australia,

We could be twins. As I read this post, the very question YOU posed in your comment ran over and over in my mind as I read Manning's view.

In brief, there is not a shred of Biblical evidence to back Manning's position.

Manning is closer to New Age (We are all gods; relativism is ok since your god is as good as my god) and Eastern Mysticism, (have a connection to the world; heresy in the biblical view; we are NOT of this world).

His position on the Cross?
An angry God of the Old Testament exacts revenge on his son by drawing every last drop of blood from him.

Truth? Christ volunteered the Cross for all of us.
He could have bowed out at any time, even when nailed tight. Brennan Manning does not know his Bible at all.

He believes the Leather bound pages are an idol to those who read it. God can not be confined in those books he says.

While it is true God can not be bound, it is also true that the Word of God is a Living Word.
God is in the mix from A to Z, Alpha to Omega.
The OT God worked on a plan of redeaming sinful man. The WORD became flesh in the NT.

In the Gospels, HE AROSE!

God is most definitely living; He is most definitely alive in the Bible.

If I read Playboy everyday, I suspect my growth in lust will increase.
If I read the Bible, i suspect my love of God will increase.

Manning reads Eastern Mysticism, wraps it in a thread of truth from the bible to make IT APPEAR true, and deceives rather well.

"And God will open wide the gates of heaven for you to enter into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
~~~ 2 Peter 1:11
And you will hear:
"Well done good and faithful servant"?
~~~ Matthew 25:21.

Christ said "Follow Me".
Not "Follow Manning".
The choice is free for each of us; just as the choice of the cross was free for Christ to do, and save each who believe.

Apologies to katdish for comment length, but sometimes truth takes more than a paragraph.
(Besides, I enjoy your blog on RSS)

You gave your blog a little makeover, eh?
Sometimes I like to do that to mine.

For the record, Manning's book "The Ragamuffin Gospel" is one of my favorite books of all time. Not necessarily because I agree with all of his positions, I don't. There are many modern day voices in the Christian movement that I enjoy reading. Having said that, the bible is my final authority.

No. Jesus will NOT ask that question. He already knows the answer to that.

It's called a metaphor...

I have Freedom in Christ. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Helen - Yeah. Playing around a bit. It's fixing to get really fancy...

The posted lyrics were important to me, not just due to video inadequacy of my laptop, but due to I am deaf. If it played, I would not hear it. So I appreciate your effort at writing it all out.

Joanna deserved an answer to her query. I spoke that answer from your favorite book, the Bible, and my favorite book too.

Your readers can simply type "Brennan Manning" into Google and a plethora of opinions will clarify his writings to the satisfaction of anybody.

Metaphor is an excellent writing style; heresy is not. Some readers may not understand the difference, and at least one stated that here.

In another blog I viewed for the first time today, "Ironic Catholic", this post was made:

Best. Confession. Response. Ever.

(Understand I see my parish priest as a regular confessor, face to face...so we often begin with brief chit-chat before starting the ritual.)

Slightly sheepish about going to reconciliation on Saturday afternoon, the 4th of July, I smile a bit, sit and say "I'm really sorry. Sin doesn't take a holiday."

Not skipping a beat: "Not to worry. Neither does Grace."

If you see my comment as sin, I hope you see grace as having no holiday as well. :)
I have no Forrest Gump ending, but I liked the movie.
Best regards kat.
